Flutter-Sleeve Swing Dress
This dress is super easy to make and extremely comfortable! I love the flow and how airy it is in the late summer heat. I made this dress out of a breathable rayon to really stay cool and get the desired drape.
Linked below is fabric similar to mine and a couple I think would look great! Unfortunately, I found my fabric at Joann on clearance last season so I could not find it to link. You will need 2-3 yards of whatever fabric you choose to make your dress. The amount you use will depend on sizing, I used 2 yards to make my dress and could have used a bit more for length.
To start, you will need your bust and hip measurements, desired length, and a sleeve opening measurement. I took all these measurements and added a couple inches each way so that I could put this dress on over my head, without a zipper to throw off the flow and drape.
When measuring your desired length, always go longer than you think necessary. Especially with so much flow, you want a dress a bit longer. My dress got a bit short on me so remember that you can always hem it higher but you can’t seamlessly add length!
Once you have your measurements, you will need to cut your fabric! Use the cutting diagram below for reference.
Once your fabric is cut, be sure all pieces are pressed well and your sewing machine in threaded with a color that will blend well with the fabric. The hems on the sleeves, bottom, and the top stitch on the neckline will be very obvious otherwise. For seams, use a serger if you have one. If not, you can finish your seams with a zig-zag stitch so they do not fray. Rayon fabric will fray a lot so be careful not to pull on any cut edges until they are finished.
Contstruct the dress as shown below. Be sure to follow each step in order to make assembly easy!
I hope that you are happy with your new swing dress, I would love to see pictures! Please comment below or send me an email if you have any questions or comments, I am here to help!
