PATTERN DESCRIPTION:

This pattern is made using a unique slipped stitch and cable detailing to create a beautiful textured heart design. Make this hat for yourself or give as a gift to spread some love!

 

MATERIALS USED:

Size US 6 (4.0 mm) 12, (16, 16)” circular knitting needle

Size US 7 (4.5 mm) 12, (16, 16)” circular knitting needle

Size US 7 (4.5 mm) double pointed knitting needles

100g/218yd (1 skein) LB Collection Cotton Jeans Yarn (shown in Classic Indigo) or yarn of your choice to obtain gauge

 

SKILL LEVEL:  Intermediate

 

GAUGE:  20 stitches = 4” in stockinette stitch on size US 7 needles

Finished Hat Circumfrence: 14, (17, 20)”

To choose the correct hat size, measure the circumfrence of your head and choose a hat size that is about 2-3” smaller than your measured head circumfrence.

 

ABBREVIATIONS:

c1b: cable one back. Slip the next stitch onto a cable needle and hold in the back of your work, knit the next stitch on your left needle, then knit the stitch off the cable needle.

c1f: cable one front. Slip the next stitch onto a cable needle and hold in the front of your work, knit the next stitch on your left needle, then knit the stitch off the cable needle.

k2tog: knit 2 together (right leaning decrease)

M: stitch marker

PM: place stitch marker

SM: slip stitch marker

sl1: slip one stitch purl-wise

sl2: slip the next two stitches purl-wise

ssk: slip the next two stitches separately as if to knit, insert your left needle into the front loops of these stitches and knit them together (left leaning decrease)

 

NOTES:

This pattern will be worked in the round. The cuff will be worked on size 6 needles, while the body will be worked on size 7 needles. Crown decreases will be worked on double pointed needles.

 

PATTERN:

Cast on 70, (84, 98) stitches on size 6 needles.

Join to work in round. Work k1, p1 rib stitch until piece measures 4, (4, 5)” from cast-on edge.

On the next round, switch to size 7 circular needles and work a double brim. To do this, lift the first stitch from the cast on edge over and onto your left needle. Then, knit the stitch you lifted up and the next stitch on your left needle together. Repeat across the round, knitting each stitch together with its correspinding stitch from the cast on edge.

Cut yarn leaving a 10” tail. Removing stitch markers as you work, thread through remaining stitches twice and pull tight to cinch closed. Tie off and weave in all ends.

 

FINISHING:

To block, soak in lukewarm water. Blow up a balloon 14, (17, 20)” around and stretch hat over balloon to dry. Attach pom-pom if desired. Enjoy!
